This video shows you a hand finishing technique for putting a mirror shine on a flat piece of precious metal clay with slightly rounded edges. When polishing flat surfaces that have sharp, straight sides, use your polishing papers on a hard flat surface, not a padded surface. A padded surface is only used when you have rounded edges. If there are only fine, light scratches on the surface of your metal, you may be able to start with 400 grit. If any scratches are still visible after sanding, you’ll need to back up to a coarser grit before continuing. Each round of sanding must remove all the previous sanding marks. For deeper scratches and pits, start with 220. To remove a large amount of metal, start with a hand file. Then always work down in grits, not skipping any, from the coarsest to the finest.
