The quetsion says: Two uses of the metal explained in terms of metals properties. I chose the metal silver. How am I to explain the uses of silver in terms of metal properties?
For me, an electronics technician, the first to come to mind is the electrical properties of the metal. Silver is much better at conducting electricity then copper. However, the cost makes silver wire simply too expensive. However, relay contacts are plated with silver. The silver used for contact surfaces enhances the connection and reduces the resistance. The lower the overall resistance in a circuit, the more efficient and the less electrical losses. Silver is good for contact surfaces which frequently open and close. Gold is used for contacts in plugs and such which are infrequently opened and closed because gold does not corrode. Which brings me to the MOST important use for silver other than plating contacts, photographic film. Photographic film is made from silver combined with other elements, like Chlorine and Iodine to make silver-chloride and silver-iodide. Certain silver compounds are light sensitive. Mix in with a gelatin, spread on a clear plastic backing and roll into a film canister, all in darkness of course, and you’ve got the film you see everywhere. The molecular structure changes in response to light. The amount of light determines how much is changed. Later, when developed, this turns out to be shades of gray in black and white film. The more light, the more silver granules plate out, the darker the negative. Just think about how many x-rays have been used. THAT is a LOT of silver. I am not certain, but I think the history was that someone noticed one day that silverware turned black if left in sunlight, but if polished, stayed bright until it was again in the light and THEN it turned black, which meant the oxide which formed on the metal when exposed to air needed light to tarnish and turn black.
